Synergy Spotlight - Nic Abberley

When did you Join Synergy, and what attracted you to the company?

I Joined Synergy in November of 2019. Having served in the army back home in Wales, I wanted to ensure I followed a career which I enjoyed and challenged me on a day-to-day basis. Synergy had more varied roles than any of the other companies and after doing some research they paid a higher rate than any other company, so this was a big advantage.

How have your previous skills helped you in your current role?

Having worked in a GSOC role for a big corporate company the skills I learnt there have had a big impact on me in my current role as a Global operations specialist without the knowledge and experience I would not be sat where I am today. I have been lucky enough to work in some of the top end corporate offices in Ireland where I learnt how to better my skills as a security officer but more so a Global security specialist.

How has your experience with the company been since you started?

My experience with synergy cannot be faulted and has always been of a positive one. Synergy and my Contractors managers over the years really have bent over backwards to help and assist with in work and in my Personal family life. Having the birth of my daughter 3 years ago and unfortunately needing to take some extra time off work due to some medical situations this was all sorted without me having to worry about time off. This made a difficult situation much smoother.

How would you describe your team?

I am in a slightly different situation to most as I work alone with only my manager who I report to twice, on a weekly basis. Having previous experience working in a large team I can safely safe we have some of the best security officers and managers around. I have found on several sites I have supervised on or worked alongside, everyone is driven to learn and professional in what they do in every matter.

What do you feel is the most interesting element of your role?

Wow where to start, my role is unique compared to most, not one day is the same in my current role. I suppose the challenges I face daily are certainly interesting. I deal with global incidents and at the same time I could be working on a termination report when a ticket could come in. Id say the most interesting part of my role me is the various tasks and roles I cover in the one role.

What do you find most challenging about your role?

Everyday can be a challenge in this role. Learning to multitask and balance certain tasks and incidents at the same time can be challenging as we do not have the luxury of a SOC team. Sometimes you need to improvise adapt and overcome.

Do you feel your work and efforts have been recognised? If so, How?

No other way to word it other than a big YES! When I was supervising in a corporate environment, I utilized synergy’s employee of the month award and this had a big factor on recognition of hard work, I have personally received several recognitions for my work over the years and it Gives you that extra boost that you are appreciated for the hard work and effort you put in every day.

What advice wouldyou provide to someone interested in joining the securityIndustry?

Do it! Most people think security is just standing at a shop door, security has so many interesting and challenging sectors. Security is such a rewarding career if you are willing to work hard. What you put in its what you get out. The skills you can learn onsite and the fact you can further your education and knowledge just goes to show the security industry is a very rewarding career. If you are thinking about joining the security sector, don’t hesitate.
