Synergy Spotlight - Gabija Cerkauskaite

What attracted you to the company?

The job position was recommended to me by a friend, I had never heard of Synergy before. During my interview with Kevin and during my induction I learned the different types of security Synergy offers such as mobile patrols and the number of people employed. I knew I would like working for Synergy when I learned of their awards and the many international locations. Overall the company seemed extremely accomplished and I was looking forward to be a part of it.

How has your education and skills gathered in criminology helped you in your current role?

Since I’m still here only a short while there’s hasn’t been anything that stuck out to me in form of my skills or education gathered in my degree, but I have to say the degree did prepare me for having a lot more discipline in myself in that I bare a lot more responsibilities and duties now. Being in a setting where I am a person of authority as such has helped me understand more of how important security guards are as a deterrent from any criminal activity and that’s it’s an important aspect of the job to be engaging with members on the workplace community and others that may be passing by that require help.

How has your experience with the company been since you started?

My experience with the company since I started had been nothing but pleasant. Everyone is very welcoming. Everyone is very helpful and patient with me as I am learning my way around this new job. I find it very entertaining seeing everyone’s reactions to me being a young female security guard where in the past 20 years it’s only been men.

How would you describe your team?

My team is very nice. There is nothing that they won’t help me with. They are patient with me as I learn my way around everything. They are always willing to help and never criticise if I haven’t fully understood or took long to understand. They definitely have a lot of patience with me. Makes work a much nicer place knowing that my team is so lovely.

What do you feel is the most interesting element of your role?

The most interesting element of my role to me personally is that during my shift I also fill in for the receptionist answering and forwarding calls. I find that this way I learn more of the staff names and can be of minor help to them from just a call away.

What do you find most challenging about your role?

The most challenging aspect of my role is the night shift. This will take time to get used me and regulate my body but I’m excited to see how I manage to adapt. I wasn’t much of a coffee person before but I am now.

What advice would you provide to someone interested in joining the security Industry? Would you recommend the industry as a gateway to further build a career in civil protection?

The only advice I have for someone interested in joining the security industry is do it. Not every security job is the same, especially since there is so many different organisations and establishments that need security guards. I think being a security guards especially a young person it helps to sort of mature and take responsibility.

It is a great gateway to further build a career as there is many different opportunities to progress to. Say those that enjoy driving would get a job in mobile patrol those that enjoy helping others learn could train people. I feel there’s endless possibilities for growth as a person and in the industry itself. I just hope that with years to come a lot more females will get their security license, as I have now experienced for myself security isn’t just for men.
