Synergy Spotlight - Darren Cochrane

When did you Join Synergy, and what attracted you to the company?

I first joined Synergy Security Solutions back in 2016 when a past colleague had informed me of the great opportunities Synergy had to offer. At the time, I had been doing retail security for two years and wanted a change where I could develop my career. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, cutbacks were made on my contracted site, and I volunteered to step down so my colleagues could support their young families. Using what I learned over my four-year tenure with Synergy, I went and furthered my career with other security companies but never truly felt a connection like I did with Synergy Security Solutions. I had an opportunity to join the Synergy team again in March of 2022 and work for a past client in the capacity of EMEA Account Manager. I am happy to be back at Synergy to grow and develop my career.

How have your previous skills helped you in your current role?

I have been a security professional for nearly 11 years now, have held various roles, worked in various sectors of the security industry, with many employers and clients alike. Through my experience, passion for safety and security, I have managed to be successful in my career. I have also had the opportunity to learn from some of the best security professionals within the industry who have guided and mentored me. I start every day with the mindset that "Every day is a school".

How has your experience with the company been since you started?

My experience with Synergy has always been very positive. I pay homage to Synergy because without their support, I would not be the security professional I am today. They introduced me to the corporate security sector, where I found my passion for security operations centers. They have also provided me with opportunities to further my education in team leadership and management.

How would you describe your team?

I would describe my team as high-performing, supportive, approachable, and actively listen to feedback. Above all, they are security professionals with the same drive and passion for safety as I do.

What do you feel is the most interesting element of your role?

The most interesting element of my current role as a SOC operator is that I am at the heart of the security operation. We monitor real-time events as they transpire, reach out to staff who may be affected, and offer support in any way that we can. We are the safeguard in place when safety is at risk.

What do you find most challenging about your role?

As the world does not sit still, every day is different, and with it brings new challenges. Some we have planned and trained for, some we have not. No matter the challenge, we ensure that safety and security are at the forefront. It is by challenging a situation that we grow and develop. Win or learn.

Do you feel your work and efforts have been recognized? If so, how?

To put it simply, yes! I work hard and do my best, which has always been recognized by both Synergy and clients alike. I have always received feedback and recognition for the work I do.

What advice would you provide to someone interested in joining the security industry?

It is not the career path I had intended to take and sort of fell into, but what I did discover is that it is very rewarding. Rewarding in the sense that what we do matters, it keeps people safe and secure in an ever-evolving world. The skills you learn and develop can be applied to all aspects of your life. We anticipate the unexpected and challenge it head-on. I can honestly say that I love my job and what I do.
