Synergy Spotlight

Former Regional Detective Superintendent in the Dublin Metropolitan Region with responsibility for the coordination of effective responses to Human Trafficking, Drugs Related Intimidation, Head of Surveillance Team, Controller of Intelligence and Informant Handling Team, Head of Digital Media Team and Coordination Team for the Dublin Metropolitan Region.  In the course of my career, I took charge of numerous major investigations into murders, organised criminal gang activities, robberies, burglaries, assaults, thefts, protests and all of the myriad of issues that I was confronted with in my service.

When did you Join Synergy, and what attracted you to the company ?

I joined Synergy in April 2022.

How have your previous skills helped you in your current role?

Unquestionably but I have been on a learning journey since I joined Synergy and learning how private security firms operate to the highest professional standards.  Listening to people when I meet them to form a complete understanding of their needs and requirements is a common thread between my former and current position. I have a sound understanding of the law and I have always appreciated the value of teamwork.  All of the cases I solved down through the years could not have been achieved without the appreciation of team bonding and professionalism and I am experiencing this with the Synergy team now.

How has your experience with the company been since you started?

My experience to date has been very positive.  I like working with dedicated people, I like the challenge of meeting new customers and existing clients to develop networks.  I have been joined by some former colleagues since I joined the team so there is obviously a healthy relationship with the Synergy team and An Garda Siochana.

How would you describe your team?

I interact very closely with a number of teams, Synergy Management team, the Account Managers and Operations teams.  I enjoy meeting the supervisors and teams of security personnel at the various sites I visit. In many ways, interacting with the various teams to achieve our goals is reminiscent of my role in An Garda Siochana.

What do you feel is the most interesting element of your role?

Meeting people is by far the most interesting, listening to their stories and being able to help out and make a difference.  We are all, metaphorically speaking, in one form or another, rearing children, so if we can help each other out along the way then life is more interesting and rewarding.

What do you find most challenging about your role?

I love a challenge.  I find it frustrating when a colleague or customer/client identifies an issue and it is not rectified immediately.   I never take no as the final answer.  I have always strived to set high standards.  I have always found that “first impressions” count and send out the signals that reassure clients and potential customers.  Every member of the team is a valuable asset.  Team members not clued into this way of thinking presents a challenge.

Do you feel your work and efforts have been recognised? If so, How?

I do, every day.  I am in constant communication with team members, I know the work being carried out is to a high standard.  I am frequently asked for advice.  I am learning new things every day.  My opinions are valued and I have been given a number of responsibilities to drive the existing business and progress new business for Synergy.

What advice would you provide to someone interested in joining the security Industry?

Synergy is a big team.  If you would like to be challenged and learn new skills, consider the security industry.  Don't be afraid to say that you don't know how to do something, just pick up the phone and ask or arrange an informal meeting over coffee for guidance, every long journey begins with the first step.  Without exception, everyone I have met in the industry since I joined Synergy has been interesting, have shared ideas and initiatives and been most welcoming.  If you want to be part of a big team and enjoy the day to day interaction with colleagues, consider the security industry.  I have completed numerous courses since I joined, having completed a long career in An Garda Siochana, seen it all, and I am still learning.
